Treasure Island! Day 14: Coconut Tree

Day 14: Coconut Tree
Question of the day was...
What kind of fruit grows on a tropical island? ...

The participation story gets the kids involved and attentive to the words because they have to hold up their picture cards whenever they hear the corresponding word...

We then check for understanding with the discussion questions...

Today was special because the kids got to see, hear, smell, feel, and taste a real coconut! Everyone enjoyed the experience and all were surprised by the texture of the outside verses the inside of the coconut, the sharpness of the coconut shell, and the sound of the coconut milk whooshing around inside...

Our coconut cracked open and coconut "milk" in a bowl with tasting spoons...

Observing the coconut shell versus the soft inside coconut meat...

We also smelled the cocout...

And finally the taste test...

The results...

Our project was making a three dimensional coconut tree with a cardboard tube and construction paper leaves. The kids attached coconut cutouts with letters printed on them...
